In the 1990s a national campaign called “Back to Sleep” was launched with the goal of reducing the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It is now known as the “Safe to Sleep” campaign and it has been successful in reducing the incidence of SIDS by 50%. The Safe to Sleep guidelines direct caregivers to place infants on their backs for sleep, which has led to an increase in the prevalence of deformational plagiocephaly (often called “flat head syndrome”).
