Internship Program

The OPC Internship Program is a required step in the process to achieve the status of Registered Technician in orthotics or prosthetics.  The Internship is completed under the supervision of a Certified or Registered Practitioner in good standing with the Corporation and may take place in a private or public facility. The 3450-hour (Method I) or the 6900-hour (Method II) must be performed in the appropriate discipline while employed as an Intern in an orthotic or prosthetic facility. Hours must be recorded and approved in the manner prescribed by OPC.

Interns must pay the annual membership fees in order to remain in the Internship program and remain in good standing with the corporation.

 

This opportunity is available to interns to gain exposure to other areas of expertise not seen at their current place of employment. The intern must complete the Off-site Internship Application Form prior to attending the facility in order for the experience to be counted toward their hours.

Yes, both Written and Practical exam application forms can be found on the Examinations page of the OPC website. In order to register for Written and Practical Examinations, applicants must fill out the appropriate registration form and pay both the application fee and exam fee prior to the registration deadline.

  • Applying with less than 5 years under first registration:
    • Method I- 3450 hours of experience are required to be eligible to take the exam.
    • Method II- 6900 hours of experience are required to be eligible to take the exam.
  • Applying with 5 or more years under first registration:
    • Method I - 1725 hours of experience are required to be eligible to take the exam.
    • Method two - 3450 hours of experience are required to be eligible to take the exam.

Yes, completing an MSc. can be applied for some Internship credit hours. See the policy in section 11.0 of the Internship Handbook for more information.

Interns are Associate Members of OPC and must adhere to all conditions for membership, including the payment of annual fees, and must conduct themselves in accordance with the OPC Canons of Ethical Conduct
