Registered Technicians

Registration promotes the development of technical competence and provides recognition within the profession of those individuals who demonstrate technical competence in orthotics and/or prosthetics. Technician Registration is awarded as an attestation of competency for the public, those who require orthotic/prosthetic services, and those in other health professions. The awarding of registration provides the Registered Technician with an appropriate and meaningful recognition of professional competence.

CLASSIFICATION OF REGISTRATION:

• RTP(c) = Registered Technician in Prosthetics in Canada
• RTO(c) = Registered Technician in Orthotics in Canada
• RTPO(c) = Registered Technician in Prosthetics and Orthotics in Canada

Registration Pathway 

• 6 E's of Registration

There are two pathways to become a Registered Technician in Canada.

Method I

1. High school diploma
2. Completion of the two year accredited Orthotic/Prosthetic Technician Program at George Brown College in Toronto
3. Register for OPC Internship Program
4. Completion of a 3,450 hour internship in prosthetics or orthotics under the supervision of a Registered Technician or Certified Clinician in the appropriate discipline.
5. Successful challenge of the written and practical national board exams.
6. Adherence to the OPC Canons of Ethical Conduct.

Method II (do not need to complete the 2 year George Brown College Technician program)

1. High school diploma
2. Register for OPC Internship Program
3. Completion of a 6,900 hour internship in prosthetics or orthotics under the supervision of a Registered Technician or Certified clinician in the appropriate discipline.
4. Successful challenge of the written and practical national board exams.
5. Adherence to the Canons of Ethical Conduct.
