About Registered Technicians – RTO(c) or RTP(c)
A Registered Technician (RT) provides technical expertise in the design and fabrication of “orthoses” or “prostheses” and their components in such a manner as to provide maximum fit, function, cosmesis and workmanship. A Registered Technicians focus is on the tools, materials and technical skills necessary to build orthoses (braces and splints) and prostheses (artificial limbs). Their training includes kinesiology, biomechanics and rehabilitation to give an understanding of the body’s movements. Knowledge on many different types of orthotic and prosthetic devices, combined with their human movement training, allows Registered Technicians to provide exceptional reparation service as well.
Subject Matter Experts
The Registered Technician fabricates, repairs and maintains orthoses and/or prostheses; and is also proficient in current fabricating techniques, familiar with material properties and skilled in the use of appropriate equipment.
The orthotic/prosthetic technician makes orthoses and prostheses from technical specifications measurements and plaster casts using a variety of materials, such as:

A Registered Orthotic and/or Prosthetic Technician is competent to perform technical assessment and management tasks. The technician also independently carries out practice management and technical implementation activities and services. In addition, the Registered Orthotic and/or Prosthetic Technician is obligated to support and conform to professional responsibilities which promote and assure the overall welfare of the patient and the integrity of the profession.
The Registered Technician is bound by the OPC Canons of Ethical Conduct and is limited to the discipline for which he/she is registered. The Registered Technician is not qualified to perform clinical tasks such as casting, cast modification, adaptation or evaluation of function of a particular device. Any patient contact will be for the purpose of assisting the orthotist or prosthetist in the technical aspects of the manufacture of a particular orthotic or prosthetic device.
